New Facts: Christa Pike Requests All-Female Execution Squad

Christa Pike asked Tennessee to staff her execution with an all-female team. She wants women to strap her to the gurney, place the IVs and push the drugs in front of witnesses, including the victim’s family. She cites post-traumatic stress from years of abuse by men.

She is also seeking to avoid a painful lethal injection. She says a rare blood disorder and damaged veins could make IV access difficult and change how the single dose of pentobarbital acts, risking a prolonged death, and has asked to be hanged instead or to proceed only if a qualified clinician can place a central line.
